こんばんはー。だいです。
本日のブログは二本立て!
まずはジョシュが本日であぶくまワークデイ最終日でしたので、英語で書いてもらいました〜。
英語が読める方はぜひお読みくださいね〜。
Hi there my name is Joshua Vance and I have spent the last 3 months at Ponta-Yama in Samegawa as a volunteer. As I come to the end of my trip I find myself looking back over what has happened and what I have learned. My trip seemed to pass by so very quickly, each day filled with enough work to make the time fly by. Interestingly I had been warned before I arrived here that the work load had overwhelmed volunteers before, but I have found that the work load was entirely reasonable and more importantly it was all enjoyable. Every week I learned something new about farming and how it is done, ranging from how to drive a rice planting machine and change tractor blades, to just how bad fertilizer really smells. Every few weeks we ran some sort of program, some kid’s camps, adult rice planting activities, and scientific functions. Each program has presented an opportunity for me to experience the true variety of Japanese culture that I had previously not experienced, as new people came and shared their cultures and personalities. Over me 3 month trip I have become quite adept at understanding Japanese, whiles speaking is still quite a challenge, but the language barrier never really effected anything. In fact over my trip I have learned more Japanese and my hosts have learned more English in return. Because of the many programs I have been able to meet all kinds of kids, college students, teachers and scientists. Some of which had previously lived in areas that I had lived in at the same time that I had lived there. Over all I do not believe that I could have asked for a better experience than the one I received while volunteering here at Ponta-Yama. The staff members here have been so friendly and welcoming, the food was truly delicious; and while I’m not even sure they have noticed it, their ability to understand and respect the differences in our cultures is invaluable and has made the experience here incredibly easier and far more enjoyable. On top of all the wonderful experiences working on the farm here and even on some of Ponta-San’s friends farms, I also enjoyed a variety of homestays that I have been sent on that have been surprisingly fun as well as incredibly informative. When I arrived I was under the impression that I would be secluded to the farm area in Samagewa village, but over the course of this trip I have had the privileged to visit Koriyama, Fukushima city, and Nasu. Each time I met one of Ponta-san’s friends that spoke English, and I was able to experience a different part of Japan, and even more importantly I got the wonderful experience of riding Japanese public transportation. Everything about this trip has been eye opening and wonderful, each person I have met here has been friendly and welcoming. And with each encounter I got the chance to share my own experiences of living in different areas and the culture that I had developed as a result. To anyone that might be considering volunteering in a similar capacity I would say that the experience is invaluable and that you will not be the same person when you leave, you will be so much more. I am incredibly grateful for the experience and I cannot wait to volunteer again.
